Renewing Your Helper’s Work Permit in Singapore

17 October 25

When it comes to employing a Migrant Domestic Worker (MDW), keeping her Work Permit valid is your responsibility as an employer. You will receive a renewal letter about 8 weeks before it expires. Failing to renew on time may result in an overstaying fine and additional penalties.

Requirements Before Renewal

Before you can renew your helper’s Work Permit, you must ensure that:

  • Insurance is purchased
  • The security bond is enforced.
  • A medical check is completed.
  • Personal accident insurance is in place.

Note: From 1 September 2025, if there are children in your household below 7 years old who are not fully vaccinated against measles, you must ensure that your helper has immunity against measles.

Other Considerations

  • If you no longer need your helper, you can consider transferring her to another employer. You may also read our guide on Tips for a Smooth Transfer Maid Hiring in Singapore.
  • If your helper plans to travel overseas just before the expiry date, you should renew the Work Permit before she leaves Singapore.
  • If you are not renewing and your helper decides to go home:
  • It is the employer’s responsibility to purchase an air ticket.
  • Ensure all outstanding salary is paid in full before departure.
  • The Work Permit must be cancelled, and her Special Pass printed for airport clearance.

Late Renewal

  • If you renew a Work Permit late, you are still liable for the levy after it expires.
  • Levy penalties or overstaying fines may also be imposed.

Documents Required for Renewal

You will need the following:

Renew Helper Work Permit Singapore - New Contract

Do You and Your Helper Need a New Contract?

Migrant Domestic Workers (MDWs) are not covered by the Employment Act, as it is not practical to regulate aspects such as working hours or public holiday work.

For this reason, the Ministry of Manpower strongly encourages employers to sign a written employment contract. This protects both parties by clearly setting expectations.

It is highly advisable to draft a new contract based on:

  • The new salary.
  • Number of rest days.
  • Off-day compensation.
  • Termination notice.

This safeguards both employer and helper. For more insights, read our article on Things to Consider Before You Hire a Maid in Singapore.
